Australians warned of second swine flu wave // 30 Jan 2010

Epidemiologists are warning Australians that a second wave of swine flu is likely to sweep through workplaces, homes and classrooms. They say it is only avoidable if people vaccinate themselves against the virus.

WHO says H1N1 is with us for another year // 30 December 2009

The leader of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, that the pandemic called H1N1 influenza (flu) virus will likely remain a major health problem well into 2011.


Kids will need two doses of H1N1 flu vaccine // Mon 2 Nov 2009

Reports coming in from the USA indicate that current studies confirm that children under the age of 9 will need two doses to be fully protected.

Clinical trials being run by the United States government confirm that children under age 9 need two doses of the swine flu vaccine optimally four weeks apart for the best protection.

Last week the World Health Organization said governments might consider giving a single dose to as many children as possible, but Dr Anthony Fauci of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said the scientific data showed it is important to get children vaccinated twice.

"Children up to 9 years had a much lower immune response." he said.

Vaccinations may stop 2nd swine flu wave:

An immunisation expert says at least half Australia's population needs to take up the swine flu vaccine to reduce or eradicate the virus. The Federal Government is offering free vaccinations to everyone aged 10 or older. Professor Robert Booy, the head of clinical research at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance at Sydney University says a second wave of the virus could be stopped if enough people take it up.

"The main concern is if not enough people are vaccinated, we will have another wave, and we will have many more deaths" he said.
